When it came to promotion the founder of Woodley's Motors, the late Harry Woodley, certainly pulled out all stops.
He became well known around town for his joke cards which also carried his advertising message.
The tradition was carried on by his son Neville who took over on Harry's retirement.
Some of the jokes were corny but there's no doubt the cards conveyed the name of Woodley's Motors into many Tamworth homes.
Now at the helm of Woodley's Motors, the founders grandson Warren Woodley still has a collection of the cards.
Typical jokes were:
Spring is coming -a young mechanic's fancies turning to misses in a car instead of in the engine;
or
Remember, the fellow who gets loaded too often eventually gets fired;
or
You might say that a nation without women would be a stagnation.
Jokes would be interspersed with advertising messages such as:
Satisfaction! Where Our Work Goes;
or
Yes! We do spray painting and patchwork.
Another gimmick was an envelope with the intriguing message, "Something You Should Know. For Adults Only."
On opening, a wire and rubber band device would be activated and the message said, "Was it a shock for you to know that Woodley, the famous car trimmer, gives you a first class job at cheaper prices?
"Woodley's, where you're met with a smile and leave with a laugh."
